Movies

Mike's got up a neat post about IMDb.

Made me think about how film creates this collective consciousness throughout those who've seen it.

There's the "O Face" there's "Are you talking to me?" there's the eery banjo lines, there's "I'll be back."

What is it about film that effects us so? Why do we follow them so closely and why have they stated to define us so?

Film more so than any other medium, perhaps music is a close second, that began as a reflection of our life but has begun to set trends and define life. At what point did this happen? With what clairvoiance does Hollywood and the music industry approach their product?

Interestingly, it's hit or miss on their part. They can float something out there, but we still choose what's cool and what's not. We flock to the things we collectively think are neat -- or get heavy advertising. Though, nothing was going to save Gigli.

If we're so interested in having our culture defined by the very things that are supposed to be relfections of our society, is it any wonder why all our new movies tend to be rehashings of older TV shows and movies? And beyond that, what can the future possibly hold?

I hope for a film revolution. Something that rejects our kitsch and strives for new. 'Cause we're starting to look shabby.
